In the closest game of the opening day of competition at the 27th Annual Gonzaga DC Classic, Our Lady of Good Counsel from Olney, Maryland defeated St. Raymond from the Bronx, NY by 7, 67-60.
The game was closer than the final score. Both teams held leads during the first and second half in a back and forth contest that reward those who stayed to watch at Gonzaga’s Carmody Center. St. Raymond, among the top-ranked teams in New York City, was clearly frustrated by Good Counsel’s stubborn 2-3 zone. On the other hand, Good Counsel’s deliberate approach and balanced scoring gave the Falcons the victory. Good Counsel sealed the victory with good free throw shooting in the final minutes.
Good Counsel had four players score in double figures, led by Junior James Valle with 15, followed by 5’10” Junior guard Cam Norman and Senior Tyler Baylor with 14. Kyle Turner, a 6’6″ Junior Forward had 12 points.
Junior Isaiah Washington led St. Raymond’s with 17 points, followed by Sophomore guard Dallas Watson with 13.
Good Counsel takes on Roman Catholic at 8:30 Saturday evening in the second semi-final game at Gonzaga.
