Early in Saturday’s first semi-final of the Gonzaga DC Classic, it looked like fans were in for a close game between Loughlin, from Brooklyn, NY, and the host team. However, by the end of the third quarter, Gonzaga’s speed and defensive intensity had built a 17 point lead, one that would only grow through the end of the game. The final score: Gonzaga 81, Bishop Loughlin 48. Gonzaga will face last year’s champion, Roman Catholic (Philadelphia) in the Championship Game at 6:45 Sunday evening at Bender Arena on the campus of American University.
Gonzaga was led, as they often are, by 5’8″ Junior guard Chris Lykes, who scored 23 points and consistently blew by defenders as he streaked down the court. Sophomore Myles Dread (6’5″) scored 15, including three 3-pointers. Junior Eddie Scott had 13 and Nigel Stewart, a 6’5″ senior, scored 11 points. Nine players scored for Gonzaga over the course of the game.
Loughlin balanced scoring wasn’t enough to keep up with Gonzaga. Sophomore guard Idan Tretout had 12 points, 6’9″ Senior Jeremy Betjol had 10 and Junior Keith Williams had 9 for the Lions.
Bishop Loughlin will face Good Counsel in the the third place game at 5:00 on Sunday at A.U.
