Rev. Joseph E. Lingan, S.J.

In 2007, the Gonzaga Fathers' Club established the Gonzaga DC Classic Pedro Arrupe Service Award. This award recognizes a Gonzaga graduate who has lived his life in service to others and meets the standards of "Being a Man for Others."

The Gonzaga Fathers' Club and the Gonzaga DC Classic Tournament Committee are proud to present the 2019 Pedro Arrupe Service Award to Rev. Joseph E. Lingan, S.J.

Father Lingan, a 1975 graduate, is the youngest of four brothers to attend Gonzaga College High School. Over the years, Father Lingan has been involved with the Gonzaga community in many ways — as a student, alumnus, Chaplain, teacher, softball coach, board member, and as the only alumnus to serve as President. In 2018, he was awarded Gonzaga’s highest honor, the St. Aloysius Medal, for his remarkable service to the school and broader community.

Father Lingan entered the Society of Jesus in August, 1979. He was ordained in June, 1990 and pronounced his final vows in September 1996. He has served the Jesuits in many positions, including Master of Novices for the Maryland, New England and New York Provinces of the Society of Jesus, as Rector of the Jesuit Community at Georgetown University, as a Board member for multiple Jesuit schools across the country and, most recently, as a spiritual director at the Ignatius House Jesuit Retreat Center in Sandy Springs, Georgia, just outside of Atlanta.

The Gonzaga community will always be most grateful to Father Lingan for agreeing to serve as interim President at Gonzaga following the sudden death of our President, Rev. Allen Novotny, S.J., in 2010. Father Lingan’s wisdom, guidance, his steady hand and his faith helped mend our shaken family. He has always carried Gonzaga in his prayers and in his heart as he continues to serve the Jesuit community and all of us who benefit from their wisdom.
