The Team

Charlotte Christian coach Shonn Brown is looking forward to having his team in the Gonzaga DC Classic again this year. In their last appearance in the Classic in 2010, the Knights made a strong showing but lost to Gonzaga in the championship game. Coach Brown, in his 12th season as head basketball coach at Charlotte Christian, believes his team can improve this season on last year’s overall 22-8 record and a squeaker loss in the quarterfinals of the 3A North Carolina Inter Scholastic Athletic Association (NCISAA) state tournament. Despite having lost three seniors to graduation and a promising sophomore transfer to Oak Hill, the team has experienced returnees including senior center Blake Preston, 6’9 220, headed for Liberty University next year, and senior guard Terrell Brown, 6’0, undecided.  Five juniors are also back from last year’s team, including power forward Garrett Shrader 6’5 195 (quarterback on this fall’s 3A division state championship football team) and guards Seth Bennett 6’3, Efosa E-Udosomwan 6’2,  JC Tharrington 6’0, and Jere Drummond 6’0. Junior “transfer-in,” power forward, Paul Hudson, 6’5 210, is expected to provide strong point and rebound production.  Coach Brown says the Knights play in the tough Charlotte Independent Conference where last year’s 6-4 win-loss record featured a win over the conference champs and several cliffhanger losses. This year, he is looking forward to the challenges in the Gonzaga DC Classic to help get his team ready to take on that conference competition, and move on to the state tournament afterwards.

The School

Founded in 1950, Charlotte Christian School is a Christ-centered, college preparatory, independent, school serving students in grades JK-12 and is located on 55 acres in southeast Charlotte, North Carolina. Its mission is to equip and develop students to integrate effectively Biblical truth and learning into their daily lives and to impact the culture for Christ. It is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and the Schools and Council of Accreditation and School Improvement (SACS-CAIS). Charlotte Christian School’s population of more than 1,000 students reflects geographic, denominational (147 different Christian churches), racial, and ethnic diversity. The school combines a devotion to Christ with a dedication to excellence. Charlotte Christian School’s goal is to maximize each student’s God-given abilities and talents as its faculty teaches to the whole child – mind, body and spirit.  Every student participates in local, national, and/or international community service projects, including Habitat for Humanity, overseas mission trips, Harvest Kitchen, The Bethlehem Orphanage, Crisis Assistance Ministry, Firefighters of Station 17, and the Carmel Hills Nursing Home, and other projects.

The school has 121 full-time teachers, 40 percent of whom have advanced degrees. The student to faculty ratio is 10:1. There are more than 40 extracurricular clubs and organizations providing each student opportunities to develop athletic skills, explore career opportunities, serve the community, and to expand artistic abilities. This year the Charlotte Christian football team won a NCISAA State Championship for the fourth time in the last 7 years. Charlotte Christian now has two former players in the National Football League, Matthias Farley (Indianapolis Colt) and Des Lawrence (Detroit Lions), and today more than 15 alumni play at the NCAA Division 1 level. Charlotte Christian’s baseball team alumni have had comparable success, with nine Major League Baseball draftees in the last 15 years, including World Series Champion Daniel Bard (Boston Red Sox), and over 25 Division 1 players in the last 10 years. Among the standouts on past Varsity Coach Shonn Brown’s Charlotte Christian basketball teams are Stephen Curry (Davidson College/Golden State) and Anthony Gill (University of Virginia).
