The Team

The St. Maria Goretti Gaels, out of Hagerstown, MD, come to the DC Classic after winning their ninth Mid-Atlantic Invitational Tournament in late November.  In the title game against St. Andrew’s (Potomac, MD), juniors RJ Blakney and Przemek Golek led the Gaels with 23 and 21 points, respectively.

Competing in the Baltimore Catholic League and the Inter-Parochial Athletic Conference, Goretti finished the 2016-17 season with a 29-9 record, good for a BCL regular season co-championship and IPSL championship.  At last season’s Alhambra Catholic Invitational Tournament, Goretti knocked off DeMatha and was a shot away from beating WCAC champions Gonzaga.  Coach Matt Miller’s Gaels are a young team, with one senior, Josh Mack, on the roster.

The campus, located in northern Hagerstown, is comprised of the main school building, the gymnasium, and the Media Library Center, which had been the convent on campus renovated to house the library, adoration chapel, and computer lab as well as offices and classrooms. The athletic fields occupy the remaining campus space and are the sites for soccer, baseball and softball practices and games. Additional athletic activities offered include tennis, basketball, lacrosse, cross country, and golf. St. Ann’s Church, located adjacent to the school campus, provides an appropriate setting for school liturgies.
