The St. Maria Goretti Gaels, out of Hagerstown, MD, come to the DC Classic after winning their ninth Mid-Atlantic Invitational Tournament in late November. In the title game against St. Andrew’s (Potomac, MD), juniors RJ Blakney and Przemek Golek led the Gaels with 23 and 21 points, respectively.
Competing in the Baltimore Catholic League and the Inter-Parochial Athletic Conference, Goretti finished the 2016-17 season with a 29-9 record, good for a BCL regular season co-championship and IPSL championship. At last season’s Alhambra Catholic Invitational Tournament, Goretti knocked off DeMatha and was a shot away from beating WCAC champions Gonzaga. Coach Matt Miller’s Gaels are a young team, with one senior, Josh Mack, on the roster.

St. Maria Goretti High School, a Catholic co-educational high school, offers a college preparatory curriculum to approximately 220 students in grades nine through 12. St. Maria Goretti is an Archdiocese of Baltimore Collaborative High School accredited by AdvancED. The Goretti community provides an environment where every student is challenged to develop to his/her highest potential. Goretti strives to meet its mission, which is to enrich students with an education based in tradition, faith, and excellence.
Located in Hagerstown, Maryland, Goretti serves students from around the region including Washington and Frederick counties in Maryland, Franklin and Adams counties in Pennsylvania, and Berkeley and Jefferson counties in West Virginia. International students at Goretti hail from a variety of foreign countries including China, South Korea, Vietnam, Lithuania, Sweden, and Denmark, among others. Over the past five years, ninety-nine percent of Goretti graduates have entered postsecondary institutions, while the remaining one-percent has entered various branches of the military service.
The campus, located in northern Hagerstown, is comprised of the main school building, the gymnasium, and the Media Library Center, which had been the convent on campus renovated to house the library, adoration chapel, and computer lab as well as offices and classrooms. The athletic fields occupy the remaining campus space and are the sites for soccer, baseball and softball practices and games. Additional athletic activities offered include tennis, basketball, lacrosse, cross country, and golf. St. Ann’s Church, located adjacent to the school campus, provides an appropriate setting for school liturgies.
